Drugstores play an important role in the Dutch self- care market

For many decades, the largest part of the self-care turnover is achieved by the drugstores which is a phenomenon not existing in other EU countries. These retailers are allowed to sell OTC drugs.

Since 2020 the number of retail outlets declined from 3.741 tot 3.288. The is mainly caused by de decline of the independent retail outlets resp. from 1.745 in 2020 to 754 in 2022. Within this group the independent DA organisation counts for 303 outlets. This is in contrast with the growth of multiple retail outlets. In the same period these organisations grew from 1.996 outlets to 2.534. The largest retail organisation is AS Watson the owners of Kruidvat with 973 outlets and Trekpleister with 197 outlets and Ahold the owner of Etos with 521 outlets.
It is obvious multiples are dominating the Dutch self-care market.
